RTM is a method of tanning process done by one step or direct process from tanning to fixing. It is different compared to the conventional tanning method because the system was done step by step or continuous. The research used RTM because the process method saved the water and used shorter time. Total of water used was = 300% and time times processing was 12 hours 45 minute, while the conventional tanning method used total water = 1550 % and time processing was 23 hours 30 minute.
Methodology of research used factorial design (2x3x4) with tanning method independent variable, skin type, and skin area test; and with dependent variable, i.e. shrinkage area in % after boiled in water as long as 5 minute. The raw materials were skins of goats, cows, and sheep in blotted condition processed for glove leather. The main chemical was Chromosal B, the auxiliaries agent were like Molescal C; Preventol ZL; Limanol PEW; Formic Acid; Sulfuric Acid; Chromosal B; Selasol TN; Tamol M; Basyntan DL; Formic Natrium; Bi-carbonate Natrium; Magnesium oxide; Catalix L; Acid Havana (penetrating 4); Preventol ZL; Novalta PF; Lipsol QLN; Sulphited Fish Oil; Prefectol HQ; Prefectol WR; Syncal DR.
The research result and analytical data statistics have a conclusion that shrinkage area after boiled in water as long 5 minute in both RTM and Conventional methods are not significant, also the variable area test. The mean of RTM shrinkage is 4,12 % and the mean of shrinkage area of conventional method is 3,10%. Both of them have smaller shrinkage area than standard of chrome tanning leather in boiling test maximal 10 %.
